Ultimate Review of Online Classes from SchoolHouseTeachers

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We've been homeschooling since my oldest was a preschooler and I am always on the hunt for the best ways to meet the needs of all four boys, in every subject. When I was offered the chance to review SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I was quite intrigued.

I'd heard of it but hadn't tried it out before I joined the Homeschool Review Crew. We tried out the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership. With my oldest heading into high school next year, that plan is the best fit for my family right now.

Online Courses for Homeschooling

Using online courses and resources for my sons is something that really appealed to me. Having children in multiple grades at one time can definitely be challenging. An option that allows my kids to work on different things at the same time, while I also work one on one with them is fantastic.

What Are Some of the Features of SchoolhouseTeachers.Com?

Our favorite features are probably the Literacy Center and Focused Learning Centers, but the Scope and Sequence option was also helpful with our sons. Having children at different levels of learning can be tough to handle, but this online class program definitely helped make that easier to manage.

What is the Literacy Center?

One super valuable resource is its Literacy Center. I cannot even begin to explain how excited I am about this section! Literacy is the single most important skill that we can teach our children. Having an impactful early literacy plan is paramount in nurturing their ability to interact, educate themselves, and to be productive members of our ever-changing society.

The Literacy Center offers a simple strategy in determining the next steps (or where to even begin) in your student's reading journey. They also have provided a generous downloadable library of material that is sectioned off by ages and their reading levels.

What are Focused Learning Centers?

Focused Learning Centers are another of my favourite aspects of SchoolhouseTeachers.com. My 12-year-old has struggled with reading for a long time. Although the Goosebumps books have unlocked a love of reading for him, he still struggles with the written word, primarily from glancing at a word and guessing the rest from experience (often incorrectly). My 14-year-old has a strong dislike for math and it's something we struggle with regularly.

Focused Learning Centers help me quickly scroll through and find one that will help them with a particular skill/subject. Sometimes it just takes a different lesson, worksheet, or example to help one of the boys truly understand a concept. The special e-books from The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine were one of my favourite finds in the math section!

How Does the Scope & Sequence Thing Work?

The website also offers outlines for each grade level that are referred to as “Scope & Sequence” to build a customized curriculum that matches the specific needs and interests of each individual student. There are also recordkeeping and checklist tools to make sure that your student is on track!

They also have a chart that breaks every course down by recommended grade levels, making it easy for visual people like me to see which new topics would work for all/most of the boys.

How did our family like SchoolhouseTeachers.com?

My fiance and I both love the site and the lesson plans. He cannot wait to use one of the geography courses with the boys when he comes back in the spring. He will be taken over geography and history-based courses for all of them since he loves those subjects and I am not a fan.

My sister checked it out since she handles art & music for the most part (I'm tone-deaf and stick figures are above my artistic ability). She found quite a few to do with my boys and cannot wait until my nephew's old enough for some of them.

Are These Online Classes for Homeschooling Worth It?

The answer to that question is ABSOLUTELY!!! There are a few different membership packages to choose from. Even their most expensive package is only $179 per year, and that includes ALL of the classes they offer (over 14,000 lessons!!). You can choose between monthly, quarterly, and annual subscriptions and cancel at any time – which I think is great. Life is always changing. Plus, sometimes it’s nice to have the option to be a little non-committal (bonus points if you heard Lizzo in your head just now)!

My family has utilized a pretty generous list of resources in the wild realm of homeschooling, and I can comfortably say that this is a good option. I feel that the membership price in comparison to services offered is a HUGE bargain, especially if you have multiple students at home. The fee covers the whole family! It's a great choice for parents who are looking for flexibility. Or use it simply to fill in any gaps within your OWN curriculum!
