I'm not a fan of heavy chemical smells and overly perfumed cleaners. I have some commercial products I use, that I typically order from Grove, but I love to make my own too. Sometimes it's because I run out of my favourites and sometimes just because I get the urge to play with new scent combinations.
DIY Disinfecting Spray
The vinegar and rubbing alcohol in this easy disinfectant spray combined with our favorite germ-fighting essential oils makes this a potent spray that is natural and safe to use.
Ingredients for DIY Disinfecting Spray
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
- 15 drops essential oil
Also needed:
How to Make DIY Disinfecting Spray
- Add your water, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol to a larger measuring cup or mixing bowl.
- Add your selected essential oils.
- Mix together.
- Pour into your spray bottle. You may need to use a funnel to prevent spills.
- Top with the sprayer attachment and add the label to your bottle so you can easily recognize in your cleaning supplies.
How to Store DIY Disinfecting Spray
I prefer to use glass bottles for my homemade cleaners. Most of them have essential oils that can break down plastic containers when stored for a long period of time. Even though they are diluted in my cleaning recipes, I prefer not to take any chances.
We get our glass bottles from Amazon and from Grove Collaborative. I really like the silicone sleeves on the Grove bottles and I'm always ordering from them, so it's convenient to add one to my order if I'm planning to try out a new homemade cleaner recipe!
You can create a fun label, buy some simple reusable labels, or just hand write your product name on paper and tape onto the bottle. Whatever method you chose, you'll likely want to make it waterproof so if there are drips it won't fade the name.
How to Use DIY Disinfecting Spray
Using a homemade disinfecting spray is super simple! Just spray down the areas you want to clean and let sit before wiping with a clean microfiber cloth (or paper towel).
Make sure to use separate cloths for different areas. We have different colours for different areas. Blue & white waffle print cloths are for washing dishes only. Using them for anything else is punishable by death….glare.

What Essential Oils Should I Use?
I used Germ Fighter and Citrus Burst for our latest batch. Germ Fighter is a combination of lemon, clove, eucalyptus, cinnamon cassia, and rosemary. I love the smell of it and often have it in our diffuser, especially during cold & flu season. Citrus Burst is grapefruit, lemon, lime, may chang, mandarin, and sweet orange.
Germ Fighting Oils
Some essential oils have antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. These germ busting essential oils help your homemade disinfecting spray pack a little extra punch!
