Easy DIY Hand Sanitizer

Washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water is always the best choice, but it isn't always an option. When you need an on-the-go solution, a DIY hand sanitizer is my favorite choice. You can whip up a batch quickly and store in a few convenient containers for the whole family, in scents you love!

DIY Hand Sanitizer

I'm a freak about washing my hands and making sure the boys properly wash their hands too! Hand soap is one thing I keep a decent stock of at all times.

But I have 4 boys to shuttle to activities, errands to run, and horrid allergies that make me sneeze way too often. This means germs galore while I'm not near a sink. Not something I want to have hanging around during cold & flu season!

That's why I keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in the car with my Aldi quarter & a bottle of spray hand sanitizer in my purse for those on the go emergencies.

This recipe uses rubbing alcohol, which is hard to find right now, so I've linked to a few recipes below that do not use rubbing alcohol in case you can't find it or prefer something else.

Ingredients for Recipe

  • 2/3 cup Rubbing Alcohol (at least 91%, but preferably 99%)
  • 1/3 cup Aloe Vera Gel
  • 10 drops Essential Oils

How to Make DIY Hand Sanitizer

  1. Mix your ingredients well in a bowl.
  2. Add to your preferred container, using a funnel if needed.

How to Store DIY Hand Sanitizer

You can store this in a variety of containers, depending on when & how you wish to use it. I reuse my old hand sanitizer container because it fits perfectly in my car. This set of 1-3 oz squeezable containers work great and are TSA approved, so you can use for toiletries when traveling too!

If you want a way to carry your hand sanitizer so you can use it quickly without digging through your purse or kids rummaging around in a backpack, my friend Ashlea over at HeartHookHome created this adorable crocheted hand sanitizer cozy! If you don't crochet, maybe drop a hint to a friend that does!

How to Use DIY Hand Sanitizer

Using a homemade hand sanitizer is the same as the store-bought stuff. Just squirt some in your hands, coating your hands completely, and then rub together until dry, making sure to get the sanitizer between your fingers and around fingernails.

What Essential Oils Should I Use?

I used Germ Fighter and Citrus Burst for our most recent batch. Germ Fighter is a combination of lemon, clove, eucalyptus, cinnamon cassia, and rosemary. Citrus Burst is grapefruit, lemon, lime, may chang, mandarin, and sweet orange.

You can go either go with germ-fighting essential oils, essential oils that smell pleasant, oils that help soothe the skin, or a combination.

Germ Fighting Oils

Some essential oils have antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. These germ-busting essential oils help your homemade hand sanitizer pack a little extra punch!

Skin Soothing Oils

Rubbing alcohol and frequent hand washing can dry out your hands. Luckily aloe vera can help counter the drying effect of rubbing alcohol in this recipe and some essential oils can help soothe the skin.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup Rubbing Alcohol
  • 1/3 cup Aloe Vera Gel
  • 10 drops Essential Oils optional

Instructions

  • Mix your ingredients well in a bowl.

Notes

Do NOT use other types of alcohol, such as methanol or butanol, because they are toxic.
If you can only get 70% alcohol, you would need to increase the amount of alcohol used or it won't be as effective. It would be about 9 parts alcohol to 1 part aloe vera.

Trying to avoid the stores? There are so many things that are super simple to make at home! Homemade is normally more cost-effective and you control the quality of ingredients used too!
