Kindergarten Handwriting Practice Tips

Tracing is the Key:

One of the biggest ways to help your kindergartner with their handwriting skills is to help them trace. It may take hours of practice, but tracing helps a child see how exactly a word or letter is supposed to be written. Although the child will trace, they will still develop their own handwriting style, which is still really cool to see. However, the biggest tip for developing your kindergartner’s handwriting is to trace and trace some more.  I suggest keeping a few handwriting practice workbooks on hand or print your own custom handwriting worksheets.

Use Different Writing Tools:

I’ve noticed that since I do not write on a daily basis, my handwriting is not as good as it used to be. While knowing how to type on a computer is super important, it’s also wise to make sure your children know how to write, and well. One way to help develop your kindergartner’s handwriting skills is to have them write with different tools. It’s fun to see their skills building as you have them write with various tools. One week can be painting words and the next week can be writing words with a big fat marker. The more they practice the better they will get.

I love the Jumbo Pencils, Jumbo Crayons, and Jumbo Colored Pencils for Kindergarten handwriting practice.

Build Up Their Confidence:

Believe it or not, but kids can be super self-conscious about their handwriting. One way to help them improve their handwriting skills is to build up their confidence. Building up their confidence will not only help them be better at writing, it will help them to become better writers. Handwriting is more than just words, it’s the secret to reading and writing throughout their whole learning career.

Hold the Pencil Correctly:

Your kindergartner’s handwriting could be suffering because of their inability to hold their pencil correctly. This is never a fun aspect of handwriting to teach your child, especially if they are left-handed. However, holding a pencil correctly is a super important part of developing handwriting.  You might even want to grab the Left-Handed Pencil Grips for your children to help them learn proper technique.

Practice the Size of the Letters:

One of the hardest parts of handwriting is getting the size of the letters correct. With a smaller practice in this area, your child will have no problem developing their handwriting over time. It’s amazing how once they get this part of handwriting development down, they can focus on what they are writing and now how they are writing.

Use Alternative Ways of Writing:

To be honest, writing with a pencil can sometimes be boring, which is why it can be fun for your kindergartner to develop their handwriting through other avenues. Use tracing on the iPad as a way to develop their hand-eye coordination or you can use paint to help them learn how to move their hands better.

Keep in mind that some kindergartners just need more time to develop their handwriting skills. It doesn’t mean they are behind; they just will develop at a different rate than other kindergartners. If you keep this in mind, you will get less frustrated when you are working with them. Do you have any tips for helping to develop your kindergartner’s handwriting?
