Homemade Play DoughEvery once in awhile, I'll cheat and buy a fit that comes with Playdough and tools, but when its gone we make our own.  I'm sure I have a dozen recipes hiding somewhere in our house, but I didn't feel like spending all day hunting (and getting sidetracked on a cleaning/decluttering mission) so I looked online.  I found an easy No Cook Playdough Recipe from Playdoughrecipe.com that looked very simple.  Of course, we tweak things a bit as we go.

Here's the final recipe we ended up using:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 4 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 3/4 cup of salt
  • 1/4 cup of oil

Directions:

  1. Mix oil & water together
  2. Add flour, salt, and cream of tartar
  3. Mix well and divide according to the number of colors you will be making. We like to put it into plastic bags, add food coloring, seal it, and let the kids squish it until the colors are mixed.  The smaller the bag, the less likely they are to get bored before it is done.
  4. Store in airtight containers (the bags work well) and it will keep for a week or two.

Since we use food coloring in a lot of projects and are never able to find a good, quality coloring locally, I hunted around on Amazon to look for a great deal. Right now, they have Ateco 12-Color Food Coloring Kit for $14.96.

Have your own recipe for playdough? Don't forget to leave the link in your comment so I can check it out!
