I always kept a small roller bottle of diluted lavender oil in my bag, because some of my kids are total bug magnets…and my ADHD brain never remembers we need to apply bug repellent until after someone gets bit.

This is one I really like to use when sitting around the fire. It works quick to stop the immediate welting and itching, but also helps keep them away.

The strong minty scent may also help keep bugs at bay. Avoid using peppermint oil on very sensitive skin or near the eyes. Peppermint EO is not recommended for children under 3. For children 3-6, its recommended to keep dilution at 0.5% (1 drop per 10 ml of carrier oil)

Prefer to try a homemade blend? This essential oil roller ball recipe is a great way to make your own natural remedy for itchy bug bites. This recipe is easy to make and perfect to carry with you, so you always have a quick fix on hand. By making this roller ball, you're choosing a simple, natural way to take care of your skin.

Start with a 10ml roller ball. Add a total of 10 drops of essential oils. You can play with the ratio but I like to use the following.

  • 5 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Basil essential oil
  • 2 drops tea tree essential oil

Then fill the rest of your roller ball with your favorite carrier oil. I typically use fractionated coconut oil, since I normally have it on hand.
