Tattie Scone Recipe

A part of a traditional Scottish breakfast, these Tattie Scones are fluffy potato scones often served with sausage. An easy and delicious way to use leftover mashed potatoes.

These Scottish Potato Scones are commonly served in Scotland for breakfast, as part of a full Scottish fry-up, or with eggs & sausage. They're also common in Ireland but known there as “fadge” and “potato bread”.

Ever since Nick moved over, I've tried to replicate some of his favourite foods. The problem is….he didn't cook! I'm having to rely on “recipes” from his family that don't have measurements because its just standard for them & online – which means a lot of testing and tweaking until he gives his seal of approval!

So what are Tattie Scones?

Tattie Scones are something like a potato pancake. They're light and fluffy, made with leftover mashed potatoes, and seasoned with butter and salt.

In Scotland, “tattie” is a nickname for potatoes, hence the name.

You cook these Scottish potato scones on a griddle with butter (or bacon grease, yum) and can eat them just like that…or properly fry them or even toast them!

They're an easy way to use up leftover mashed potatoes for breakfast and they freeze well, so I'll often cook them up and freeze them for the future if I end up with extra mashed potatoes.

Scottish Tatties Ingredients

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Flour
  • Butter
  • Kosher salt
  • Baking Powder

How to Cook Tattie Scones

Making these potato scones is so easy!

Mix all ingredients together and split the dough into 4 balls.

Roll each ball out to 1/2 thick circle on a floured surface and cut each one into 4 equal wedges.

Heat griddle to medium-high. Cook on each side until lightly brown, about 5 minutes per side.

At this point, you can eat them as is, pop in the toaster, or fry them.

And that's it! Just 20 minutes to this delicious Scottish breakfast treat!

Tips for Making The Best Tattie Scones

  • Fry in bacon grease for extra flavor.
  • Leftover mashed potatoes work great for this – IF you didn't add a lot of liquid when making them and they're dry.
  • Use a potato ricer if you have one.

How to Freeze Tattie Scones

One thing I love about Tattie Scones is how easily they freeze. I often make them out of leftover potatoes even if I don't plan to eat them right away or make a double-batch when I do make them for breakfast.

To freeze, allow to cool completely and freeze in a Ziploc freezer bag with wax paper between them.

When reheating frozen potato scones, there is no need to defrost them. You can just fry them straight from the oil.
