With just a few minutes of prep in the morning and your trusty crockpot, you can come home to this delicious Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings Recipe ready to be served in just 30 minutes. With herbed dumplings and all gluten-free ingredients, this is an up-level on your favorite comfort food!
Chicken and Dumplings is one of my favorite meals. For me, it's the ultimate comfort food and there's nothing quite like a steaming bowl of chicken and dumplings on a chilly evening.
I used to make it on the stovetop but that's such a hands-on process that it meant one of my favorite comfort foods was left only for special occasions. When I saw everyone begin sharing their Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings recipes on Pinterest a few years ago, I had to give it a try. After a few attempts, I finally perfected this Gluten-Free Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings Recipe!
Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings
For the absolute best flavor, I added the extra step of seasoning the chicken and I brown it before adding it to the crockpot. While you can technically skip this step, it only takes a few minutes and I think the added flavor is SO worth it.
I also used herbed dumplings to really increase the flavor and, as a bonus, use up some of our indoor herbs! It's so fun and rewarding to use fresh herbs we grew in recipes.

Can I Freeze Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings?
Absolutely. You can freeze before or after adding the dumplings.
To freeze before, just follow the instructions above and stop before making the dumplings. Allow the chicken mixture to cool completely, transfer to a freezer bag or container, and freeze.
Allow to defrost and reheat in the crockpot. Add the dumplings according to instructions.
Otherwise, freeze leftovers after everything has cooled. Thaw in the fridge for 24 hours, and reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave.
How to Store Leftovers
Chicken and dumplings make the best leftovers! I love taking these for lunch the next day. Just store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Can I use canned biscuits as dumplings?
A lot of crockpot chicken and dumpling recipes use canned biscuits instead of homemade dumplings. If that's what you want to do, go for it. You may just need to adjust the final cooking time and, of course, note that canned biscuits may not be gluten-free.
What do I need to make this Slow Cooker Chicken & Dumplings?
My slow cooker is my favorite kitchen gadget. Well, gadgets. I have a few of them and each serves a different purpose. My go-to is this 6 qt Crock-Pot. I love the locking lid and programming options. I use this for practically everything but have an 8 qt Hamilton Slow Cooker for when we have guests or I'm doubling larger recipes for the freezer.
