Nighttime Sleep Aid Homemade Sleep Salve

I've always been jealous of people that can just lay down and fall asleep.  My best friend and I can be on the phone and I know the second she climbs in bed because she passes out on the phone.  While I can lay in bed for hours trying to get my brain to shut up and let me fall asleep.

Over the years, I've learned some tricks to make it easier to get some good sleep, like taking an Epsom salt bath before bed, having super soft sheets and a body pillow, having my room completely dark and listening to soft music quietly.  Sometimes I would still find myself laying there for hours though.

After complaining talking to my mom, she asked why I didn't make up an oil blend or salve for it. So I did!

I used my basic salve base, added dried lavender, and some of my favorite essential oils.

What a difference it makes when I apply it before bed!  No more laying there for hours on end.  I'm normally asleep within thirty minutes now…as long as I don't get caught up in a new book!

Preheat your oven to 170 degrees.

Combine coconut oil, almond oil, and lavender in an oven-safe dish. Place in the oven for 2-4 hours. Around 4 hours seems to work best. You can also do this in a crockpot set on warm!

Discard your herbs & pour the strained oil into a medium pot on medium heat.

Stir in the honey until completely combined.

Add the beeswax, stirring until completely melted.

Remove from heat & allow to cool slightly.

Add your witch hazel & essential oils, stirring well.

Pour the mixture into your containers and seal once it has cooled to room temperature.

Homemade Sleep Salve Benefits:

Making homemade natural products is always going to be my favorite way to fix any issues we have sleeping.  The wonderful essential oils in this blend help to relax and calm your body.  The result is that you'll be able to fall asleep much easier.

Getting to sleep easily helps you to have a more satisfying sleep.  The result is obviously a better day the next day, and a healthier body.

I like making this in large batches and storing it in a simple airtight container on my nightstand.  That makes it easy to put on my feet right at bedtime.

It works best when covered with socks, but if you struggle with sensory issues and having socks on your feet, use a slightly smaller amount and allow it to dry a bit before getting into bed.  It will get on your bedding, but will still be effective.

I can't stand sleeping with socks, so I put it on after my bath with socks, and then pull them off after I'm in bed.

    1. Shileen,

Yes, regular coconut oil is what I recommend using. If you use fractionated coconut oil, you would have a much thinner product. You might be able to compensate with more beeswax, but I haven’t tried it.
