There is nothing easier to throw together than a quick batch of fajitas for dinner, and this Homemade Fajita Seasoning is a great way to save time and money. Not only can you control what is in this mix, you can make it up in a hurry at any time. Throw it in the crockpot with chicken breasts for an easy dump chicken recipe too!
No longer do you have to depend on seasoning packets in the store to give you what you need to cook your favorite easy meals. The beauty of this seasoning is it works great with chicken, beef, shrimp and even simply on vegetables. Whether you are grilling, baking or sautéing your fajitas this homemade fajita seasoning is the perfect way to get just the right flavor on your dish.
I'll be honest, I used to cheat and buy that Fajita mix from the store or be even lazier and buy the pre-seasoned fajita chicken with onions and peppers from the meat counter at Hy-Vee, but that was before we started paying attention to what we were really eating. Now I only buy things that I have an ingredient list I can actually read and understand, which means making almost everything from scratch!
Homemade Fajita Seasoning
This blend is easy to mix up, and also makes a fun and unique gift to give to friends and family around the holidays. Pour into jars, add a label and add to a gift basket that has things like a jar of homemade salsa, a tortilla press, a fun apron with peppers or similar items on it, or even a great new Mexican cookbook.
You can pour these seasonings into a bowl and mix with a spoon, or use a large gallon sized plastic zipper baggie and shake it up so it is evenly distributed. That is our favorite way to make it when we are creating gifts out of this blend. Simply double, triple or quadruple the recipe to make larger batches. There are tons of cute glass and plastic jars available at your local dollar store that are perfect for pouring this in for storage.
- 2 1/2 tbs. paprika
- 2 tbs. salt
- 2 tbs. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. cayenne
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1 tsp. thyme
- Combine all ingredients together and mix well.
- Store in airtight container.
To use: Dry 1 pound of chicken breasts then toss in a little olive oil. Sprinkle a few tablespoons in your mix over the chicken. Grill or fry up in a skillet. You could even put the chicken breasts into the crockpot, skip the olive oil, and sprinkle the mix on top.
This makes about 1/2 cup. I often quadruple this recipe and store it in a pint sized mason jar. 2 heaping tablespoons is equivalent to 1 store-bought package.
Making this homemade fajita seasoning will help you to save money, always be prepared for any meal need, and most of all be able to control the amount of sodium you are using. Most ready mixed seasoning blends have a ton of sodium in them, and this can be a real issue when you are working to change your diet habits.
