One of the most heart healthy and popular breakfast recipes is oatmeal, and this Blood Orange Oatmeal is a great choice that is just a bit different than your classic flavors.  With bright citrus flavor, it is easily one of our favorite breakfast meals.  Using almond or cashew milk makes this dairy free, and even better for those who are on restricted diets.  Blood orange is one of those lovely citrus fruits that is often overlooked.  While it isn't superior to a regular orange for health benefits, it is a beautiful color that often makes kids more inclined to reach for it.  It makes this breakfast oatmeal dish a beautiful presentation that you will be glad to serve to your family or even guests.

Blood Orange Flavored Oatmeal Recipes

Making any oatmeal recipes is a simple process that takes a bit of monitoring, but is well worth the time spent.  This simple recipe is enough to serve two, but can easily be doubled for a meal for the whole family.

Blood Oranges

Prep with your oatmeal ingredients, including peeling and cleaning the orange ahead of time. While you can do this while the oats are simmering, I find it helpful to do all of my prep work before I begin cooking.  It makes for a neater workstation, as well as prevents the frustration of something burning on the stove because you were distracted preparing other ingredients.  As you'll find when cooking oatmeal recipes o the stovetop, it's important to make sure you watch so the don't burn or stick to the bottom of the pan.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup steel cut oats
  • 1 cup nut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 blood orange
  • dash of nutmeg

Instructions

  • Add the oats, nut milk, and water to a small pot on medium low. Allow the liquid to heat up and oats to slowly absorb it stirring occasionally.
  • When the oats have plumped and are done add just a dash of nutmeg and plate.
  • While the oatmeal cools for a minute, cut into the blood orange with a sharp knife, removing the peel and fleshy membrane.
  • Slice, quarter or divide the orange and add it to the oatmeal or you may mix it right into the dish.
