For years, I have been trying to figure out how to be more productive throughout the day when I am just not a morning person.  I am definitely a night owl, and after having children realized how tough it can be to stay on track throughout the day.  These tips really help me to manage to be more productive not just in the morning, but throughout the day.

5 Tips For How To Be More Productive In The Morning

Eat a good breakfast:  Even if you are not a breakfast person, get yourself a small helping of a healthy food for fuel. Yogurt, whole wheat toast, a power bar, a smoothie, or whatever your preference may be. You don't have to just eat traditional breakfast foods.  You can easily have a sandwich, or leftovers from dinner the night before.  The idea is to provide your body and mind with fuel.  A car cannot run on an empty tank and neither can you so make sure you get something quality in your belly as soon as you feel like eating.

I like to plan ahead with a few things like freezer breakfast burritos, or smoothie packs in the freezer for a great green detox smoothie. One of my favorite premade breakfast items are Cranberry & Bacon Bison Bars I get from ThriveMarket!

Start the day off with a positive attitude:  I can’t cite any studies but I am sure they are out there- something like 4 out 5 psychologists say you are more productive when you have a positive outlook. Begin your day with prayer or meditation, upbeat music, positive affirmations, or a chapter from a good motivational book. Start the day off on the right foot and it will likely keep on in that direction.

List your most important goals for the day:  Whether you have two things on your list, five, or ten get them down in black and white.  This serves two purposes. First, it helps you focus on your important goals when they are written down in front of you.  Secondly, when you are able to cross something off your list it gives you a sense of accomplishment that you have completed something- spurring you on to do even more!

I love making to-do lists for not only my work, but our household chores and task each day.  I use a dry erase calendar for chores, and a fun pretty journal for my work tasks.  These little things help me to feel on target and focused. I also keep a running list with Reminders that syncs between my computer and iPhone of things I have to do every day/week.

Check email and social media before other tasks:   I am guilty of wasting a lot of time constantly checking Facebook or emails throughout the day.  I may or may not waste time playing games as well.

So why am I encouraging you to get on the web first thing? I have learned that if I go ahead and get on first thing in the morning to check emails and private messages, I can often put out fires before they get out of control and take more time later.  I can accept offers before they expire, and make other important connections.  However, you must set a time limit and get off the internet or at a minimum those distracting social media tabs.  I will allow myself to check a few more times throughout the day and give myself 15-20 minutes to peruse Pinterest or crush some candy.

Think about dinner and plan:  Yes at 7 am,  or whenever you get up. If you use a meal plan, reference it and set out what you need. Thaw out meat, set cans and boxes out on the counter, etc. to prepare yourself for stopping later in the day for that meal.  This has the double bonus of keeping that nagging voice out of your head that you are forgetting to do something so you can focus on your other tasks.  When dinner time comes around, you won't be wondering what's for dinner and making a mad dash to the grocery store.  I often use a Crockpot to make it even easier.
