Apple Pie Spice Playdough

One of the best parts of fall is the wonderful scents from all the baking.  But you don't even have to heat up the kitchen to enjoy spicy fall aromas with your kids and this yummy scented sensory experience will make the entire room smell like an apple pie!

A truly fun way to get in some sensory and imaginative play, fine motor skills, and even math, science, and art!  Make this heavenly scented Apple Pie Spice Playdough with items you probably already have on hand in the kitchen today.

Fall is a great time to put a twist on your favorite sensory activities, like homemade pumpkin pie spice slime or hot chocolate playdough! You can use these activities as a stand-alone activity or build it into your homeschool lesson plan.

A unit study on apples can be built with a few crafts, incorporating math into your activities or a few math worksheets, reading some fun books about apples (like Johnny Appleseed, How Do Apples Grow?, or Apples, Apples, Everywhere), and some writing prompts for older children.

Apple Pie Spice Play Dough

Heat water to near boiling in the microwave (or use an electric kettle) and stir it into the flour until well combined, along with your melted coconut oil.

Add vanilla, stir, then flip out onto a floured surface, allow to cool until comfortable to the touch and knead until soft and smooth.

If you wish to add color you can do so at this point 3-4 drops of food coloring at a time. I wanted to offer the kids all the apple colors so I divided my dough into thirds and colored it red, yellow, and green- to keep my hands from becoming stained I mixed each color in a plastic bag.

Once completely cooled you can store your play dough in an airtight container if it becomes dry simply add a bit more oil to refresh it.

Add cookie cutters, spoons, rollers, cinnamon sticks, cloves, mini pie pans and other items to encourage your child in their sensory play.

Ways to Use Apple Pie Spice Playdough

• Have them create small balls of play dough and sort by size and color.
• Roll into snakes and practice fall spelling or vocabulary words.
• Use playdough counting mats for counting, addition, and subtraction practice.
• Use alphabet playdough mats for letter recognition.

The possibilities are endless and your dough will last for months, giving your child countless hours of sensory play experiences.

Note from Savanah: My kids are a bit older than Jody's but they still enjoy playing with playdough.  It's a great sensory activity to help them use their creativity and recharge a bit after a hectic week. I even enjoy sitting down and making fun creations with them to give my brain a bit of a break sometimes.

Ingredients

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 3/4 cups water
• 1 cup salt
• 2 T. coconut oil melted
• 2 T. cream of tartar
• 1 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1 T. apple pie spice
• 1 tsp. cinnamon
• 1 tsp. nutmeg

Instructions

• Whisk together flour, cream of tartar, salt, apple pie spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
