7 Simple Tips for Homeschool Organization

As a home educator you may feel pulled in a thousand directions a day by not only your students but your spouse, younger children and if you work from home also your employer. Here are 7 Simple Homeschool Organizing Tips to help you beat the overwhelming urge to throw in the towel on tough days. Choosing to be a home educator takes a lot of patience and dedication but these simple tips will help make that a lot easier to accomplish day to day.

7 Simple Homeschool Organizing Tips

Give each child their own space: If you are teaching more than one child make sure that they each have their own space for books. Whether it be a shelf on the bookcase, a tote for storage, or a space in the closet make sure that each student has a designated place to put their books when not in use

Give each child their own assignment folder or binder: A simple folder for each subject or a 3-ring binder for everything is a great way to keep track of what has been completed and what is still outstanding. Give each student their own folders to put assignments that need to be graded in and a designated spot on your desk or shelf for it to be placed at the end of each day for your attention.

Assign each child a color: For their space, their binders, or their folders make a color theme for each child. This will help you see when something is out of place and help those who aren't reading yet know what is theirs and what are their siblings.

Purge paper monthly: There will inevitably be tons of loose papers from homework, worksheets, and projects floating around in your child’s binder. Once a month remove anything that isn't a quiz, test, or a future study note. If you want to keep records of the homework, invest in a scanner to scan the documents and then toss them.

Keep homeschool supplies separate: Designate what supplies are to be used only for school and what can be used in free time. If you have certain craft items, books or games that are for educational purposes only make sure to keep those separate from similar items to be used outside school. If it goes in the homeschool room it must stay in the homeschool room.

Let older kids help: If you have vast age differences (7th graders and kindergarteners) allow the older students to help with grading younger students simple assignments, leading or practicing on things like letter recognition, counting, shapes and simple mathematics. This frees up your time and helps them to learn responsibility which also keeps your classroom in order during busier times of the year.

Take a step back: Sometimes the worst thing we can do to ourselves is keep pushing when we simply need to take a step back, breath and walk away. Homeschooling can be the most rewarding experience you ever accomplish but it is also the most frustrating, stressful and unorganized at times. When the going gets tough, stop what you are doing and walk away for a few minutes of calm, peace and reflection. A cup of coffee, favorite soft drink, piece of chocolate or a hot shower can renew your energy and give you a new outlook on the needs in your classroom.
